Camden Streets - Central Avenue

CENTRAL AVENUE runs east to west, between Ferry Avenue and Van Hook Street, in parallel to Van Hook. The street originally ran, uninterrupted, from Railroad Avenue all the way through to the rear of Evergreen Cemetery. The erection of the Clement T. Branch Village public housing project in 1940 erased the 900 block. In 1954 the Franklin D. Roosevelt Manor public housing project erased all prior construction in the 800 block and the 700 block east of Kossuth Street, although some homes in the project did carry Central Avenue addresses. The 600 block of Central Avenue was erased during the construction of I-676, with only one exception, the legendary Nick and Sophie's Tavern, known more commonly in recent years as Sophie's.

During the early 2000s the Roosevelt Manor project was razed, and many new homes and apartments were built in the 600, 700, and 800 block of Central Avenue.

Prior to the 1960s there were a few buildings that stood in the 1000 block, which runs east from South 10th Street to the rear of Evergreen Cemetery, crossing Mulford Street and Tioga Street. Of these, only 1055 and 1057 Central are still standing, according to satellite photos from 2013.
