$2400 Lost In 2 City Burglaries Camden police today were investigating two separate burglaries which netted thieves more than $2,400 in cash and checks and 20 blank money orders. According to Detective Albert Devone, the first incident was reported about 10 o’clock last night by Ismael Alicea, the owner of a food market at 644 North 9th Street. Alicea said he returned to his apartment above the market and discovered $900 in cash stolen from a rear bedroom. The second burglary occurred at Shelton's Variety Store at 922 Ferry Avenue. The owner, John Shelton. reported the loss of $1,562 in cash and checks from a security box, and 20 blank National Express money orders. Shelton listed numbers on the money orders as SN4084180 through SN4684199. It appears that he bought adjoining homes at 953 and 955 South 9th Street shortly afterwards. The 1910 Census shows William O. and Kate Sawyer at 955 South 9th Street. Daughter Katie and her husband William Rogers lived with them, daughter Adaline and her husband James Hughes lived next door at 953 South 9th Street. William O. Sawyer was still serving as a member of the Camden Fire Department when the 1914 City Directory was compiled. He had by this time been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He and wife Kate were then living at 953 South 9th Street and were still at that address in late 1918.
RAIDERS ARREST THREE, SEIZE WASH BOILER STILL Second District police seized a "wash boiler" still and arrested three persons last night when they raided a dwelling at 954 South Ninth Street. Arrested were George Young, 29; his wife, Ethel, 19, and Anna Fussel, 37, of 614 Chestnut Street. Police also took along the Young's three year-old son, Julian, and lodged him in the detention room under the care of a police matron until his parents obtain bail. The raid was staged by Sergeant Walter Mattison and District Detectives Vernon Jones and Thomas Cheeseman. Young was held as proprietor and the others as material witnesses. Judge Pancoast Proves to 21 That Honesty Is Best Policy If there’s anything Police Judge Pancoast doesn’t like it's to have people trying to fool him, he said. So yesterday Pancoast sent two alleged speakeasy inmates to jail for 60 days and gave the confessed proprietor only 50 days. Emil Hatter, 35, of 829 Carpenter Street, was arrested for violating the ordinance prohibiting congregation of disorder1y persons on the premises by Lieutenant Herbert Anderson Thursday. Hatter told the court that he was proprietor and was in the illegal liquor business to provide for his two children. "That's no excuse," said the judge, "you should provide for them without breaking the law." He fined Hatter $50 and sentenced him to 50 days when he was unable to pay. The judge then turned to Edward Mackay, 38, of 531 Ray Street, and Alfred Brooks, 45, of 700 Pearl Street [wrong address - PMC], who, Andersen said, were drunk in Hatter's establishment. Both men admitted having a few drinks, elsewhere, but insisted they were sober and that they did not buy the drinks from Hatter. "I'm good and tired of having peop1e trying to fool me," said Pancoast. "I don't know what they take me for. I'm going to end it, though, by giving each of you 60 days." My Mother stayed at 2312 then remarried in 1950 to my beloved stepfather Joseph Miller. Mom then became Ruth Miller. They stayed until late 60s-early 70s, then moved to Fairview. The house was sold to neighbor Dorothy McClammy who lived few door away. Ms. McClammy also bought and lived in house owned few doors away by my cousins Andrew and Ann Romaine.
